About Eleanor Roosevelt and Cooperatives
Eleanor
Roosevelt spoke at the ground-breaking ceremony for Penn South Cooperative
in New York City (right).
Penn South is the first NORC, or "Naturally Occurring Retirement Community
in America."
Penn South has 2,820 apartments almost all occupied by seniors many who were the original co-op members in the 1960's.
President Kennedy was the keynote speaker at the groundbreaking for the Penn South Cooperative ground-breaking (shown below, with Eleanor Roosevelt located to the left of the photo). In his remarks he said, " It is the task of every generation to build a road for the next generation. And this housing cooperative, the efforts we are making in this city and State and in the National Government, I believe can provide a better life for the people who come after us—if we meet our responsibilities.
