Outpost Natural Foods Cooperative has been providing delicious natural, organic and local foods to the Milwaukee community since 1970. Being a co-op, Outpost supports its community by giving back with contributions to various local non-profit groups and organizations. In 2006, Outpost and the Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation joined forces to establish the Outpost Co-op Community Fund as another fruitful way to give back to our rural communities while at the same time support co-op development. Outpost gives the annual interest earned on its fund to the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service’s Organic Farmer Mentoring program, which pairs experienced organic farmers with transitioning organic farmers to promote the successful adoption of organic methods through one-on-one interaction. www.mosesorganic.org/mentoring.html
Keeping dollars local keeps local economies thriving and sustainable. The same can be said for local rural economies, too. More and more Midwest family farmers are finding themselves under pressure from development or commercial agriculture interests. Small farms are disappearing at alarming rates and millions of acres of arable farmland is lost. Organic agriculture can reverse that trend and provide a sustainable lifestyle for family farms. Farmers can continue to grow edible food in time honored traditions that nourish the land and respect the well being of their animals. Organic farms help support a healthy and clean environment for the planet, generate new life in our rural sectors and provide delicious, safe, home-grown food for their local urban neighbors. It is our hope that through our contributions to MOSES we can grow more organic farmers in the midwest. It’s a win for everyone!
